Image Notes

This close-up view shows the datestone (1875) above the centre pier of Ribblehead Viaduct. During the restoration works of 1988 - 1992, the numerals were treated, sealed, then painted with gold leaf. One of the renewed downpipes is also visible in this image: these allow water draining from the trackbed to be channelled away from the masonry, thereby reducing the risk of water and frost damage.
