Primary / Secondary References

The 1911 MR landplan shows a signalbox at the original location of this structure.

This publication pre-dates the relocation of the signal box by approximately nine years, but Figures 3, 9 & 10 and Plate 12 all relate to Settle Signal Box in its original location (see Structure 236340 for further details).

An article on pages 7-8 states that Settle Station Signal Box was moved from its original operational position at 236m29.5c on the 'up' side (see SCRCA Structure ID 236340) to its current location at 236m36c on the 'up' side (this SCRCA Structure) overnight on 14th / 15th June 1997. The article explains the reasons for the move; describes what was involved; and includes two small B&W photographs: the first showing the signal box after loading onto six rail-mounted trolleys, the second showing the signal box in its new (i.e. current) location. The article also mentions FoSCL's plan to restore the signal box and to open it as a museum (all of which has subsequently happened).

This structure in this location is not mentioned in Gough, John: "The Midland Railway - A Chronology", 2nd edition, published by The Railway and Canal Historical Society (1989). (See Structure 236340 for details of Settle Station Signal Box in its original location.)

Notes / additional information

Settle Station signal box was restored by FoSCL volunteers and it is now a museum open to visitors on selected dates.

The wooden signal post (located beside the steps of the signal box) and its 'Distant' signal arm were originally installed on the operational railway near the south portal of Blea Moor Tunnel, where it formed the Blea Moor 'Up Distant' signal.

The signal boxes that remain standing within the boundaries of the SCRCA can be compared and contrasted via the 'SCRCA Structure Type Definition' page for signal-boxes.

27th February 2013: English Heritage commenced a 21-day consultation exercise for the proposed 'listing' of Settle Station Signal Box by circulating a covering letter, a consultation report, and a location plan to a selected number of individuals and organisations.

19th March 2013: As a formal response, SCRCA Project Team Member Mark Harvey created and completed an 'SCRCA Structure Evaluation' document for this structure and sent it to English Heritage via e-mail. A copy of this document (in pdf format) is available for viewing / download at:
http://www.foscl.org.uk/sites/foscl.org.uk/files/scrca/structure-evaluations/signal-boxes/SCRCA_Structure-Evaluation_Settle-Station-Signal-Box_v3.pdf.

On 5th March 2013, the Network Rail website contained a page entitled "Britain's signalling heritage" which included a link to an Excel spreadsheet listing all of the remaining signal boxes on the NR network as well as those on preserved railways. The URL for the webpages is:

http://www.networkrail.co.uk/community/interest-groups/signalling-heritage/

A re-ordered extract from the full spreadsheet (in pdf format), showing the entries for the SCRCA signal boxes (sorted in order of their rail-location), is available here.

Settle Station Signal Box is one of two signal boxes within the SCRCA that were selected for assessment for listing by John Minnis in "Railway Signal Boxes: A Review" (English Heritage, 2012). This recommendation was accepted and Settle Station Signal Box was granted Grade II listed status on 14-Aug-2013. The news was announced by English Heritage on 20th November 2013 in an article entitled ""North Of England's Railway Heritage Recognised". This article is available online at: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/about/news/north-england-railway-heritage-recognised/

Structure Location Map

Tips: This structure is located approximnately at the centre of the map below at the pointed end of the red marker. To adjust the scale of the map, either click on the [+] and [-] buttons (if Google has displayed these in the top-left corner of the map) or double-click your mouse buttons anywhere in the map area: left button = [+] = zoom-in, right button = [-] = zoom out). To 'pan' (move) the map, hold-down the left mouse button, then move the mouse. To open an information bubble containing brief details of the structure, left-click on the red marker. Please note that the position of the marker is approximate because Google keeps moving the map (yes, really!).
