Donations

Our members are very generous with their donations and this is one of our main sources of income.
Donations help us to finance some of our projects - all of which help to support the Settle-Carlisle railway line. For example:

  • In 2011 FoSCL contributed £10,000 towards the refurbishment of the 'gateway to the Settle-Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall lines' waiting area and signage at the north end of platforms 5 and 6 at Carlisle Station.
  • We contributed £15,000 towards the refurbishment of Appleby Station, a classic case of pump-priming by FoSCL - which enabled a further £100,000 to be raised from other funding bodies within a matter of just a few days.
  • We contributed a further £15,000 towards the exterior redecoration of Ribblehead Station.

Our recent projects include the building of a new heritage style waiting shelter at Settle station, which was highly commended at the 2017 Railway Heritage Awards. We have some highly skilled volunteer carpenters who, using our workshop in Settle, make replacement heritage doors and windows for the stations along the line.  All these activities and the many more that we undertake cost money.
