The Abandoned Village of Thorns

A 6 mile walk to Thorns  which returns over the shanty site tramways shadowed by the Ribblehead viaduct. Walk introduction at the visitor centre before leaving from the station yard at 11.30. Exhibitions , talks and cafe open 10.15 to 3.30.

Ribblehead was historical important for its trading routes . Drovers frequently  passed through , often gathering at Gearstones for refreshment on their travels south. They would take the well worn packhorse route through Thorns  which once occupied a prominent position. The rise of the railways added to the decline of this way of life.
