Footsteps in Time

September 10th

This free event starts at 11 .00  in the Ribblehead visitor centre on the platform with a talk on railway incidents over the 150 years of  train travel on the line. The cafe is open by 10.15 until 15.30 or later. There are photos and exhibits inside the visitor centre throughout the day.

At 12 noon we leave the station yard on  a moderate  6 mile walk over the shanty tramways passing the entrance of caves  which lead into the shallow labyrinth covering this area. On reaching Thorns, discover a village finally abandoned due to the coming of the railway. We return  over Thorns Gill packhorse bridge crossing a deep limestone chasm through which Ghyll beck flows.. Finally view the shanty site and viaduct as we head back to the station.

We return in good time for trains home. 16.15 S 16.35 N

Further details and a guide for participants can be found in our leaflet from stations along the line and on the website.
