November Volunteer Newsletter

Photographic Display

The display at the RVC and Horton Station attracted much interest. Many of the subjects could claim a link to the railway, and were familiar to the Trust’s volunteers.

Volunteer Forum

This will take place at the Folly in Settle on Thursday 1st November, 2-4pm. Thank you for all the contributions to the agenda, and for confirmation of attendance or otherwise.

Volunteer Handbook

This is almost complete…. It is intended to share a draft copy at the Forum.

The Craven Herald

An article was published on 17/10/18  which claimed that: ‘The RVC is hardly ever open’. I have asked for a correction to be printed and will submit an article prior to re-opening.

Lithophone

The waiting room on the north bound platform at Horton is now graced by a lithophone, which to the uninitiated is a xylophone made out of rock. This is the work of local craftspeople and schoolchildren, and Horton Quarry. It is intended to reinforce the links between local organisations, and to be a musical diversion for anyone waiting for a train. It is safe to assume that it is a unique feature on Britain’s railway network.

Refurbishment

The RVC will close completely for the month of November for waterproofing the west elevation

Christmas opening 8th and 9th December

This is still at the planning stage, but expect a tree, decorations, festive snacks and drink, and a good atmosphere. There have been many offers of help, and I will produce a rota for each day which will offer involvement to all who want it.

FoSCL Website

A revamped version is just going online. I will continue to offer articles about the work of the Trust, but contributions are always welcome from anyone, especially with photographs. Please send them to Richard Morris at [email protected]

End of Season

The RVC café, shop and visitor centre will close on Wednesday 31st October. Thank you to all the volunteers for giving so much time throughout the season. Your efforts have contributed hugely to the work of the Trust, and enhanced the visitor experience. The Visitor Book is full of appreciative comments from our guests from all over the world.

Revenue as of 31st August was significantly up on last year, from £7889 to £9402. Even allowing for small price increases, this represents progress, and profits will be invested in station facilities.

Finally, thank you to Derek who has continued to collect revenue, offer advice, and deliver supplies.
