WCML passenger diversions

The Independent recently had an article on the passenger train diversions from the West Coast Main Line via Hellifield and along the Settle-Carlisle Line planned for a fortnight in January https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/west-coast-trains-carlisle-line-wcml-b2830875.html

This would have been wholeheartedly welcomed 35 years ago as an undoubted contribution to the saving of the S&C from closure.  Nowadays the picture is more nuanced, with concerns on the impact on existing Leeds-Carlisle and Manchester-Ribblehead scheduled services.  The line has limited excess capacity due also to the increasing numbers of freight paths.

We wish Avanti well and hope all goes smoothly in January.
